One player who is somewhat synonymous with Wolves' time in the Premier League under Mick McCarthy is Kevin Doyle.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international - who earned 63 caps for his country - made 93 appearances for Wolves in the Premier League era, which puts him fifth in the club's all-time rankings in terms of Premier League showings.

But how did he end up at Molineux?

Well, after an impressive season with Reading in which he bagged 18 goals, McCarthy and Chief Executive Jez Moxey moved to bring the forward to Wolves, as the Royals remained in the Championship having lost to Burnley in the playoffs.

£6.5m was handed to Reading in 2009, and Doyle was a Wolves player - it turned out to be a very good move by the Midlands-based club.

Aside from making the fifth-most Premier League appearances for Wolves, the Adamstown-born marksman currently stands third in the club's all-time Premier League scorers chart with 18 goals to his name - only Raul Jimenez and Steven Fletcher are ahead of him.

In total, Doyle scored 34 goals in 179 games for Wolves, while also grabbing 23 assists.

Taking his transfer fee into account, it means that each of his goals cost the club just £191.2k, which is pretty good value for money given how effective he was under McCarthy.

The Irishman won the club's Players' Player of the Season award after his first campaign at Molineux, in which he also finished as Wolves' top-scorer with nine goals, despite having his fair share of injuries.

The now-retired 36-year-old was definitely a hit at Molineux, and even stayed as the club sank down the Football League - he helped win the League One title in 2013/14 towards the end of his time in the Midlands.

He may not have sailed off into the sunset as he would've liked, although McCarthy and Moxey can consider the signing of Doyle as a good piece of business.
