Wolves have been heavily linked with Alexis Vega in recent months but his displays at the World Cup suggest that Julen Lopetegui might be better off looking elsewhere in January.

It has been suggested that the Old Gold have the Chivas star on their winger ahead of next month's transfer window and they will no doubt have been keeping a close eye on him during the recent fixtures in Qatar.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, Mexico crashed out of the World Cup on Wednesday evening despite a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia, with Vega one of several players to underperform in Gerardo Martino's side.

After failing to score or assist in any of the three games against Poland, Argentina and Saudi Arabia, Vega earned an extremely disappointing 6.15 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This ranked him as the second-worst player in Mexico's squad of those to start every single game, which emphasises that he was a big disappointment as they failed to reach the knockout stages.

On Wednesday night, a 3-0 win against Saudi Arabia would have been enough for Mexico to progress, with Poland losing 2-0 against Argentina, but missed chances cost them a round-of-16 game against France.

As per Sofascore, Vega would earn a poor 6.5/10 rating for his display against Herve Renard's side and was substituted at half-time after an under par first 45 minutes, in which he registered just 22 touches of the ball.

The Wolves target wasn't exactly productive on the rare occasions he did see the ball either, as he missed a big chance which equated to 0.52 expected goals, which was the second-most of any Mexican player.

Lopetegui desperately needs attacking additions in January if he is going to turn Wolves' season around but the last thing the Spaniard needs is more players who can't finish their chances, as the Midlands club are currently the lowest scorers in the top-flight with just eight to their name.

While Vega has been described as 'extraordinary' and "versatile" in the past, his displays at the World Cup were extremely ordinary, so Lopetegui should look for a more accomplished attacker when considering January signings at Molineux.
