In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie revealed his surprise over Conor Coady's rise to England stardom.

The Wolves defender made his Three Lions debut last September and has since gone on to captain his country after being handed the armband mid-game against San Marino in a recent World Cup qualifier.

While Hendrie has been impressed with Coady since his arrival to the Premier League with Wolves, the ex-Aston Villa player has admitted he did not see the above coming, using it as an example when discussing Ezri Konsa's own England hopes.

On Coady becoming an England international this season, Hendrie told FFC:

"Look at the players that are getting brought into the England squad these days and Conor Coady being one of them. Who would have thought he would have got a call-up? And too right, he's been excellent over past seasons and this season again, so why shouldn't Konsa be amongst that?"

As well as form, Coady's familiarity with playing in a back three may be another reason why Gareth Southgate has turned to the 28-year-old.

It is a system the England manager heavily uses and one Coady has become accustomed to at Wolves, with his club boss Nuno Espirito Santo often using a 5-3-2 or 3-4-3.
