Wolves’ decision to loan out Fabio Silva has backfired

Wolves‘ decision to loan out Fabio Silva during the summer looks to have massively backfired when you consider Bruno Lage’s desperate striker situation at Molineux.

The young forward joined Anderlecht on a season-long loan earlier in the summer after failing to find the back of the net in any competition last season.

It has been a tough start to life for Silva at the club, with the teenager having the weight of a £35m price tag on his shoulders and managing just four goals in his first 62 appearances for the Old Gold.

Should Wolves have loaned out Silva?

However, scoring goals was a problem across all of Wolves’ side last season, as they managed just 38 goals in the top-flight, the worst of any side to remain in the Premier League.

Conor Coady reiterated what Silva could add to Lage’s side last season, saying:

“We know what he brings us. He’s a young lad who is working every single day. He’s been fantastic since he came in. He works so, so hard to improve and get better, and you see that now.”

His exit paved the way for Wolves to sign Sasa Kalajdzic from Stuttgart but after the Austrian injured his ACL on his debut, Lage has been left in a very precarious situation once again and looks extremely low on attacking options.

While Diego Costa looks set to join the club as a free agent, the 33-year-old is no longer the player he was at Chelsea, as he managed just five goals in his most recent spell with Atletico Mineiro in Brazil.

Considering Lage’s side have managed just three goals in the opening six Premier League games of the season, the Portuguese manager may well be regretting his bold call to loan out Silva, especially after his excellent start to life at Anderlecht.

The 20-year-old has already scored seven goals and assisted two in just 12 appearances for the Belgian side, which suggests that the monkey is well and truly off his back, and hopefully he will return to Wolves a much more confident player in front of goal.

Considering the injury and goalscoring problems at Wolves right now, it seems as if loaning out Silva may have been a huge mistake.
