It's been all doom and gloom recently for Wolverhampton Wanderers. They currently sit in the relegation zone following just two Premier League wins all season and are currently managerless - having sacked Bruno Lage at the start of the month.
There might just be a small ray of light for Steve Davis however, with Liam Keen revealing a positive injury update regarding centre-forward Raul Jimenez.
Jimenez will fly back to England on Friday and continue his recovery at Compton the Express & Star understands, and, despite not currently being fit to play, his desire is to return to action for Wolves as soon as possible while also making Mexico’s World Cup squad, with the tournament kicking off in under four weeks times.
Fantastic news for Wolves
The 31-year-old hasn’t featured for the Old Gold since August and has scored just once this term - against Preston North End in the EFL Cup.
Due to Jimenez’s injury problems, Lage signed striker Sasa Kalajdzic at the end of the transfer window, only for the Austrian to suffer an ACL injury of his own during his debut against Southampton.
This prompted the manager to bring in former Chelsea hitman Diego Costa, but with zero goals in five matches so far, the move hasn’t exactly provided the club with the attacking spark they currently require.
Davis needs Jimenez back as soon as possible if Wolves have ambitions of avoiding a relegation battle this season.
Since joining from Benfica in the summer of 2018, the Mexican has scored 53 goals and registered a further 23 assists, and led the club to top-half finishes in three of their four seasons back in the Premier League.
Last season saw the striker score just six goals, yet he was still the club’s joint-highest in all competitions and his experience and natural goalscoring ability have been sorely missed this campaign.
This promising update is undoubtedly fantastic news for Davis, as it will give the 57-year-old hope that Wolves will be able to escape the precarious battle at the bottom of the table, especially if the Mexican can come back with a bang.
