Wolves were credited with an interest in French full-back Jonathan Clauss during the summer transfer window and the Marseille man could have aided the Old Gold's attacking woes.

It was suggested that Wolves, Chelsea, and Manchester United were all keen on signing the 30-year-old after his impressive performances with RC Lens in recent seasons, but in the end, he would join fellow Ligue 1 side Marseille in a bargain deal worth just €9m (£7.9m).

Last season saw the right-back contribute a phenomenal five goals and 11 assists for RC Lens in the French top-flight, averaging a superb 7.22 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

By comparison, Raul Jimenez would finish as Wolves' top goalscorer with six and top assister with four, which suggests that the Old Gold were seriously lacking in creative quality, something which has obviously continued into the new campaign, with just five Premier League goals to their name so far this season.

Rayan Ait-Nouri was ranked as Wolves' best performer (of those to make at least 10 appearances) as the Frenchman averaged a solid 6.96 rating from WhoScored, which emphasises just how good Clauss was last season.

The France international has continued his fine form into the new season, notching one goal and four assists for Marseille in just 10 league appearances, averaging an impressive 7.16 rating from WhoScored.

The fact that the 30-year-old has as many goal contributions as the Wolves squad combined this season, despite playing at full-back, highlights both how good he has been and how poor the Old Gold are going forward right now.

After notching one goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Angers SCO earlier in the season, Marseille manager Igor Tudor sang Clauss' praises.

He said:

"He's an incredible player. I knew it from the first time I saw him. And he's a good boy. It's a pleasure to be his coach."

Clauss' ability going forward has also seen him compared with Barcelona legend Dani Alves in the past, which considering the Brazilian's incredible career is no bad thing, and Wolves would have surely loved to have a player of the Frenchman's quality in their side this season, especially after such a dour start to the campaign.
