Wolverhampton Wanderers were reportedly interested in a late move for Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, and the Englishman could have been a better option than Boubacar Traore for Bruno Lage.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Wolves were keen on bringing in the 26-year-old on transfer deadline day, but the Championship side were not keen to sell him - which is understandable given his impressive start to the new campaign.

Indeed, Brownhill has four goals and one assist over his opening eight league fixtures this season, which has helped him average a superb 7.36 rating from WhoScored for his performances - a score bettered only by Ruben Neves' 7.37 in Bruno Lage's squad.

Since joining Burnley from Bristol City in 2020, Brownhill has gone on to make 93 appearances for the Clarets, in which he has contributed seven goals and five assists.

Lee Hendrie was full of praise for Brownhill in 2021, saying: “Josh Brownhill, I think he is a fabulous player, I really do. He’s very energetic, he’s very neat and tidy on the ball, he gets up and down the pitch well and you know what you’re getting when you’re getting a player from Burnley."

His Premier League experience and impressive start to the season suggest that he could have been a better addition than Wolves' deadline day signing from Metz.

Traore joined on a loan-to-buy deal from the French side in the final hours of deadline day and will compete with Matheus Nunes, Joao Moutinho and Neves for a starting spot in Lage's midfield.

However, the 21-year-old has made just 32 senior appearances in his career, most of which came last season as Metz were relegated from Ligue 1, with his performances earning him a disappointing 6.42 rating from WhoScored.

Brownhill, meanwhile, averaged a 6.86 rating for his performances in the Premier League, after contributing two goals and three assists in Burnley's relegation side, which suggests that he could be a more reliable and consistent player in Lage's midfield.

Therefore, if Traore fails to make any real impact within the Lage's side this season, the Old Gold might be left regretting their decision to sign the Malian over Brownhill.
