Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking set to have a very productive January transfer window as Julen Lopetegui aims to preserve the club's Premier League status over the coming months.

He appears to be adding an influx of midfielders to his squad, having secured a deal for Mario Lemina, while Fabrizio Romano tweeted that the Old Gold are also set to close out deals for Joao Gomes and Pablo Sarabia this month.

These signings will add some competition in midfield, but with the Molineux outfit scoring just 12 goals in the Premier League all season - the fewest of any top-flight team - it is attacking players who should be on the priority list.

Indeed, Wolves have been recently linked with a move for Aston Villa striker Danny Ings according to The Mirror; and he could certainly be an upgrade on Diego Costa, who has yet to find the net since arriving in the Black Country in September.

The 34-year-old hasn’t exactly set the world alight at Wolves this season, scoring no goals, missing three big chances and averaging just 17 touches per game.

Bruno Lage brought the former Chelsea hitman to Molineus in order to add some physicality and improve the club's goalscoring woes, but the move hasn’t worked out, and Ings could offer something totally different for Lopetegui.

Although not scoring as often as he might have liked this term, the 30-year-old has still netted six goals in 18 appearances for Villa, while taking 1.5 shots per game and creating one big chance.

Noel Whelan described Ings as a “phenomenal finisher” following a solid run of form at the end of last season, and a change of scenery for the former Liverpool marksman could do him the world of good and get him back to the form that he showed at Southampton prior to joining Villa.

Indeed, in his final season with the Saints in 2020/21, Ings scored 12 goals and registered four assists in 29 matches, with a goal every 182 minutes.

The £120k-per-week striker also created three big chances in that campaign while taking two shots and making 0.8 key passes per match, and if Lopetegui could get him back to these sorts of numbers with a move to Molineux, then Wolves should certainly boost their goal tally over the coming months, in the process securing a discernible upgrade on Costa.
