Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled off an incredible 3-0 victory today over a Liverpool side who are in disarray this season, and Julen Lopetegui appears to have given the Old Gold back their fighting spirit.

The Molineux outfit grabbed the opener via an early own goal from Joel Matip and were soon 2-0 ahead following a debut goal from January signing Craig Dawson, and it was an advantage that they wouldn’t relinquish.

The second half saw the Reds dominate possession and record 14 shots to the home team's five, but they couldn’t find a way through a stubborn Wolves defence who have now kept a third clean sheet in ten games under their current manager.

Captain Ruben Neves added the icing on the cake by scoring his team's third goal with 20 minutes left, and the result moves them out of the relegation zone.

The collective team effort from the home side was incredible, but special praise must go to their skipper, who inspired his side when they needed it most.

The Portuguese midfielder was excellent at controlling play from the heart of the pitch, taking 62 touches while completing 40 passes, and he achieved a Sofascore rating of 8.5/10, the second-highest of any player to feature.

His attacking qualities were on display throughout the match, and along with his well-taken goal, the 25-year-old made one key pass, created one big chance and delivered two successful crosses.

His defensive work shouldn’t go unnoticed either, with Neves showing a fighting spirit throughout the match. He managed to win 75% of his duels and made six clearances, two blocks and three tackles as he aimed to help out his defence at every potential opportunity, and this played a huge part in not only Wolves securing the win but also keeping a clean sheet.

Reporter Steve Madeley was full of praise for Neves before the half-time whistle went, tweeting: “So many great displays from Wolves in the first 34 minutes but Ruben Neves surely the best player on the pitch again. Superb in and out of possession.”

If Lopetegui keeps the captain fit for the rest of the season and he and the Old Gold play like this every week, they will comfortably avoid relegation and the 56-year-old can spend the summer building a team which should be targeting a top-half finish in 2023/24.
