Wolves: Lage could unleash youngster Tyler Roberts

Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded their first win of the Premier League season on Saturday by defeating Southampton at Molineux 1-0.

The win moves Bruno Lage’s side into 14th spot in the table with six points and will hopefully give them momentum going forward.

Which club did Wolves loan Willian Jose from in the 2021 January transfer window?

The victory wasn’t without its negatives, however, with new signing Sasa Kalajdzic suffering a horrendous ACL injury on his debut for the club, whereas Raul Jimenez was withdrawn from the squad before kick-off with it unclear when he will be able to feature for the Old Gold again.

Surprising news emerged this morning that former Chelsea striker Diego Costa will undergo a medical at Molineux tomorrow and at 33 years old, it’s a big gamble for Lage to take, especially with the side stagnating at the lower reaches of the table.

It appears the manager has no other option, although he could turn to his youth prospects as well in the U21 side in order to stem the tide while his best offensive players are on the treatment table.

Lage could unleash Tyler Roberts

18-year-old Tyler Roberts has been impressing at youth level for Wolves over the previous year or so, and Lage may well find no alternative but to bleed him into the squad and unleash his unpredictability among a host of other young players coming through.

He scored 13 times and grabbed three assists in the U18 Premier League for the Old Gold, while also impressing when asked to take a step up to the Premier League 2 and FA Youth Cup, scoring once and twice respectively.

These stats are even more impressive considering his natural position is on the right wing, although he is versatile and can play anywhere along the front three, including in the roles already occupied by Jimenez and Kalajdzic this season.

Journalist Tim Spiers gave the youngster praise when Wolves defeated Tottenham in the FA Youth Cup in February, with Roberts scoring a brace in a 3-0 victory.

Spiers dubbed his individual goal as “stunning” although their competition ended at the semi-final stage to Manchester United.

Should Wolves give Tyler Roberts a league debut?

There might be no greater time than an injury crisis to showcase his ability to the manager and prove he deserves at least a chance in the next few weeks.

Whatever happens, Wolves have a talented individual in their midst and it surely won’t be long before he makes his first-team debut, especially if injuries continue to riddle with their attacking plans.
