Wolves have been heavily linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon sensation Matheus Nunes throughout the summer transfer window, and despite fellow interest from some of Europe's elite clubs, the latest reports suggest that Bruno Lage's side are in pole position to sign the midfielder.

What's the word?

According to reports from Portugal, Wolves are the only suitor to show any concrete interest in signing the 23-year-old, despite previous links with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.

The report claims that Nunes is aware that, should he leave Sporting this summer, Wolves are 'ready to advance' to the next step of negotiations, with the Old Gold having already submitted a bid for his services.

The report added that the player is keen to stay with Ruben Amorim's side for another year, but the Lisbon club could still consider a sale if an improved bid is made.

An unbelievable coup?

Considering some of the clubs credited with an interest in Nunes this summer, Wolves would do extremely well to convince him to come to Molineux.

However, the Old Gold have history on their side in this aspect. Their relationship with Jorge Mendes and his Portuguese contingent has allowed them to sign top-quality Portugal internationals such as Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in recent years.

It would also surely see Wolves break their transfer record, with reports suggesting that he would cost €60m (£52m) this summer, but given the disappointing end to last season, it is clear that Lage needs quality reinforcements this summer.

Nunes' former teammate Goncalo Santos was full of praise for the 23-year-old last year, saying: “It's unbelievable when he has the ball at his feet. Nobody can catch him; it’s impossible because he's too fast.”

Therefore, it seems clear that Nunes would be a superb addition to Lage's squad this summer, so Wolves supporters will be hoping that their 'concrete interest' is acted upon, with the aim of bringing him to Molineux before the Premier League season kicks off next month.
