Wolverhampton Wanderer's recent 0-0 draw with Bournemouth marked the third time that the side hasn’t scored in the Premier League this season.

Alongside West Ham United and Nottingham Forest, they are the joint lowest scorers in the division with just two goals and it appears their goalscoring woes from last season have carried into the current campaign.

They finished the 2021/22 Premier League campaign on a grand total of just 38 strikes, with only the three relegated teams scoring less - and, if it weren’t for an excellent defence who conceded only 43 times all season they surely would have faced a relegation battle.

Bruno Lage has signed Goncalo Guedes from Valencia and Sasa Kalajdzic from Stuttgart in an effort to improve their stagnant attack, and the manager should be unleashing the Austrian striker against Southampton.

On the chalkboard

Lage spoke to the press on Friday regarding Kalajdzic’s involvement against Southampton this afternoon, saying: “We are doing our best, let’s see what happens, but I think so.”

This will be a big boost to the Molineux faithful, who are desperate for a win and to see someone arriving that has evidence of scoring at the highest level.

The 25-year-old netted 22 Bundesliga goals for his previous club while also registering 11 assists, proving that he can perform in one of the best leagues in the world.

Although last season wasn’t as prolific as the campaign before due to injury issues, the Austrian still scored six goals in 15 appearances, while also developing his all-round game too.

He made 1.5 key passes per match and created six big chances during his time on the pitch. The 6ft 7 marksman also succeeded with 59% of his dribble attempts, suggesting he isn’t just a typical target man.

However, 17 of his 34 club career goals have been headers and Lage will be telling his wingers to provide plenty of deliveries into the opposition box.

His former manager Pellegrino Matarazzo dubbed the player “invaluable” when he was at Stuttgart and with his goalscoring record plus wonderful aerial ability, this praise is certainly fully justified.

The Bundesliga’s loss is the Premier Leagues' gain and Lage will be determined to get his side back amongst the goals. Starting Kalajdzic this afternoon will be the first step to achieving that goal, as the striker certainly has the potential to dominate the Southampton backline.
