Dexter Lembikisa made his senior Wolverhampton Wanderers debut in the midweek win over Leeds United and new manager Julen Lopetegui might consider starting the teenager ahead of Nelson Semedo at right-back.

The 19-year-old gem, who is capable of playing as both a left and right-back, replaced Jonny for the final eight minutes in the Carabao Cup and helped the Old Gold pick up an important 1-0 win.

Interim manager Steve Davis was low on options at right-back after Semedo's rash red card in last weekend's fixture against Brighton, a game which highlighted exactly why the former Barcelona man cannot be trusted in defence.

After some non-existent marking from the Portuguese full-back allowed Kaoru Mitoma to equalise at Molineux, he then hauled down the Japanese winger when he was through on goal.

He was rightly shown a red card and Wolves were almost doomed to defeat at that point, with Pascal Gross' late winner leaving the Old Gold languishing in the relegation places in the Premier League.

In Lembikisa, Lopetegui could have a more defensively reliable option at right-back, as the youngster has impressed for the academy in recent seasons as a full-back.

The versatile defender has already contributed one goal and one assist in 11 Premier League 2 appearances this campaign, while he managed one goal and two assists in 21 appearances last term.

The fact that he is already a regular at Premier League 2 level, despite only turning 19 earlier this month, suggests that he has a very bright future at Molineux, which was testified by academy manager James Collins.

He said:

“Dexter’s a player who has been here at Wolves a while now and has progressed at maybe a different rate to some of the other players he’s been here with.

“He’s progressed really well and shows the other boys in the Academy that you don’t always have to be at the top of the group at 13, 14 or 15 years old to be at the top of the group at the very end of youth football.

“People progress at different speeds and at different times for their development, and Dexter’s had a really rapid progression over the last 12 months and has shown rapid improvement in his development. He’s got a good character and that always helps you to progress well."

Considering Semedo is ranked as the 18th-best performer in Wolves' side this season with a shocking 6.31 average rating from WhoScored, Lopetegui will surely be looking for an alternative at right-back when he takes charge at Molineux, and Lembikisa could be the ideal candidate.
