Wolves: Paul Onuachu would be a huge Jimenez upgrade

Wolves have been linked with Paul Onuachu recently, and the Nigerian striker could represent a huge upgrade on Raul Jimenez in Bruno Lage’s side next season.

It was reported last week that the Old Gold were one of several clubs taking an interest in the 28-year-old, who looks set to leave Genk this summer.

Onuachu also reportedly favours a move to either the Premier League or La Liga, which would put Bruno Lage’s side in a good position to sign him. Considering Wolves’ desperate need for a striker this summer, you would hope that they can agree a deal with the Belgian Pro League club.

Last season saw the Nigeria international hit 23 goals in all competitions for Genk, following up an extremely impressive 2020/21 season which saw him plunder 35 goals, including 33 in the league.

Meanwhile, Jimenez finished as Wolves’ top scorer in the Premier League last season with a measly six goals. The Mexican has understandably not been the same since his awful fractured skull injury and will turn 32 next season, so it is difficult to see him rediscovering his prime goalscoring touch.

The former Benfica marksman also struggled with his all-round play, earning a poor 6.66 average rating from WhoScored across his 34 appearances in the top flight.

Who is the better striker?

Meanwhile, Onuachu averaged a much-more impressive 7.19 rating for his performances in Belgium; and while it is difficult to compare the two leagues given the difference in quality, he would certainly arrive at Molineux in confident goal-scoring form, which is exactly what Lage needs.

Given that he stands at a remarkable 6 foot 7, he would also offer much more than Jimenez in the air, emphasised by his average of 3.4 aerial duels won per game last season, in comparison to the Mexican’s 1.9 per game.

Can you guess which Wolves player scored the most goals in all competitions during the season in question? Let's start with 2010/11...

Onuachu won a lot of praise from Dutch website Voetbalkrant for his performance in a 3-2 win in 2021, as they said: “Onuachu showed once again that he is much more than the man with the goals.

“Even more than usual, Onuachu was the pivot against OHL. Almost unbeatable in the duels, even in the direct duels against Ngawa, by no means a choirboy.”

Therefore, given the two strikers’ respective form in recent campaigns, combined with Wolves’ lack of reliable attacking options, the Nigerian looks as if he would be a superb option for Lage this summer.
