Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing SC Freiburg winger Roland Sallai in the January transfer window and the Hungary international could be a big upgrade on Hwang Hee-chan in Julen Lopetegui's side.

What's the word?

According to Hungarian journalist Ben Bocsak, several clubs are interested in signing the 25-year-old forward in next month's window, after he switched agencies and opened the door from an exit from Germany.

The Old Gold, as well as West Ham, Sevilla, Lazio and Fiorentina are all listed as interested parties in Sallai, with Freiburg likely to demand around €20m (£18m) for his services, should he depart the Europa-Park Stadion in January.

"Many clubs are interested in Roland Sallai (25) in January. He switched agencies recently and is open to a move," he tweeted.

The Hungarian wide man certainly has a good history at Molineux, as he scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing of England in the Midlands earlier this year, so if he could replicate that performance on a regular basis in a Wolves shirt, he would surely prove to be a quality addition to Lopetegui's squad.

Better than Hwang

Sallai hasn't really replicated his form for Hungary with Freiburg so far this season, as he boasts no goals and no assists in eight Bundesliga appearances.

However, the 6-foot brute has hit a combined 12 goals and 11 assists across the last two campaigns in Germany's top flight, which suggests that he does know where the back of the net is.

This is a far better return than Hwang would manage in his one season in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, as despite playing in an undoubtedly stronger squad, the South Korea international would contribute no goals and just one assist in 18 appearances in the 2020/21 campaign.

Sallai and Hwang have both struggled for regular starts so far this campaign but the Hungarian leads the way in the majority of attacking statistics, having averaged more shots (1.9 vs 0.5), key passes (0.8 vs 0.2) and dribbles (0.6 vs 0.3) per league outing than the Wolves wide man.

Therefore, if Lopetegui wants to amend Wolves' attacking woes in the second half of the season, he needs to improve on his attacking options, and it seems clear that reported target Sallai would be an upgrade on Hwang at Molineux, so Jeff Shi should definitely consider signing the Freiburg man.
