Wolverhampton Wanderers could make a move for a former Premier League hitman…

What’s the word?

The Old Gold have been linked with a move for Edin Dzeko lately and journalist Pete O’Rourke has now weighed in on what could be a sensational return to the Premier League for the Bosnian as Wolves look to solve their striking issues.

Speaking to This is Futbol, he stated: “It’s going be an interesting one regarding Džeko. It just seems like he’s not going to feature so much for Inter Milan this season now that Romelu Lukaku has gone back there.

“He was a top player and helped City win a couple of Premier League titles.

“I do think bringing in a new forward is something that Wolves really need to do this summer to improve the goal-scoring ratio.”

Much-needed addition

Given the striking problems that Bruno Lage faced last season, it would make plenty of sense to swoop for a new talisman that could improve them now and help teach the young Fabio Silva how to step up to fill the role.

Wolves’ top goalscorer in 2021/22 was Raul Jimenez, but with only six Premier League strikes it makes for rather disappointing reading.

Now that he is reportedly injured for the foreseeable future, he desperately needs back-up.

With Silva having only featured 22 times last season, and now gone out on loan for the new season, signing some experience up top to deputise for their Mexican talisman could be a smart move.

Dzeko already has 130 Premier League appearances under his belt, having contributed towards 73 goals in his time at Manchester City. Plus, he already fits the play style that Lage has implemented. All the signs point towards signing the Bosnian.

His manager at Roma, Eusebio Di Francesco was full of praise for the man he dubbed a “fantastic professional”.

He continued: “He’s an extraordinary player, and not just in terms of his finishing – he gets the team playing, brings the ball down and produces good service for his teammates.

With FBref likening the £153k-per-week forward to Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, he is certainly in good company. In fact, the 6 foot 3 marksman boasts 3.41 aerials won per 90, whilst ranking in the top 8% for progressive passes.

This, combined with his 20 goal contributions from last season prove that he can still come in and perform to a high level, despite now being 36 years of age.

There is no doubting that he would be a welcome addition to the midlands outfit, and his age and playtime could certainly be managed alongside Jimenez, whose return date is still uncertain.

It is a move that just makes sense.

AND, in other news: Bruno Lage could seal “immense talent” with late £17m Wolves bid, it'd be a huge coup.
