Wolves interested in Joao Palhinha

Wolverhampton Wanderers are considering a move to bring Joao Palhinha to Molineux this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a number of reports by Portuguese publications (via Sport Witness), who claim that Bruno Lage is keeping a very close eye on the performances of the Sporting Lisbon midfielder at Euro 2020 ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

According to one report, Sporting have set Palhinha’s asking price at a figure of €30m (£26m), although the Liga NOS champions are not believed to have lost all hope of keeping the player on their books this summer, despite the significant amount of interest reported from a host of Premier League clubs.

Lage must move

Considering just how impressive Palhinha was for Sporting last season, in addition to turning in a fine display for Portugal against world champions France at Euro 2020, Wolves interest in a move for the 25-year-old come as hardly surprising news.

Indeed, over his 32 Primeira Liga appearances for Ruben Amorim’s side last term, the £16.2m-rated defensive midfielder averaged 1.5 interceptions, 3.3 tackles and 1.2 clearances and won a whopping 9.1 duels per game.

The £9,100-per-week man also chipped in for his side in an attacking capacity, scoring one goal, creating two big chances for his teammates and making an average of 0.4 key passes per league fixture.

These returns saw Palhinha earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12, ranking him as Sporting’s sixth-best performer in the Portuguese top flight as he played a huge role in helping the Leoes win their first Liga NOS title for 19 years.

These displays also saw the 25-year-old earn a call up to Fernando Santos’ Portugal squad for Euro 2020, with Palhinha coming on as a half-time substitute in the 2-2 draw with France, a game in which the midfielder made three tackles and won seven duels, earning him a SofaScore match rating of 7.3 – the second-best rating of any Portuguese player in the fixture, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo.

Can you guess these obscure Wolves players? Here's the first one...

As such, it would very much appear that the man whom Amorim dubbed a “special” player would be a fantastic addition to Lage’s options in midfield at Wolves next season, leading us to believe the 45-year-old should do all he can to convince Palhinha of a move to Molineux this summer.
