When Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed they were signing Diogo Jota on a permanent deal in 2018, there wouldn’t have been many of the Molineux faithful who thought he would move on for £41m just over two years later, despite his incredible talent.

Following 44 goals in 131 appearances for Wolves, the winger joined Liverpool and the Old Gold have struggled to replace his goalscoring presence on the wing ever since.

Wolves have been linked with Mexican winger Alexis Vega and journalist Pete O’Rourke suggested he could have a similar sort of impact that Jota had at the club.

Speaking to Football FanCast, the journalist said: “Yeah, I’m sure Wolves fans will be hoping he had the impact of Diogo Jota, and Vega is a versatile forward he can play wide or can play down the middle.

“He's still playing in Mexico right now with Chivas and I think Wolves fans will be keeping an eye on him during the World Cup with Mexico where I’m sure he will figure as well.”

The 24-year-old has played in Mexico for the whole of his career and has registered 47 goal contributions - 24 goals and 23 assists - in 121 matches for C.D. Guadalajara, which is an excellent return from a left winger.

Vega has pedigree at international level too, winning 21 caps and scoring four goals, and the attacker will be hoping to lead Mexico to the quarter-finals in Qatar and break the legendary fifth-game curse that has plagued them since reaching the last eight in 1986 – a World Cup in which they hosted.

As O’Rourke states, the supporters will be keeping a close eye on Vega during the tournament, and with the January transfer window opening just two weeks following the end of the World Cup, there could well be a mad scramble to sign him.

Wolves' goalscoring woes have been evident once again this season, with their forwards contributing just six goals in 2022/23, and this has largely been a factor in the club’s current demise.

And, if Vega were to prove himself by exploding on the world stage in Qatar later this month - something that the winger's form in Mexico would appear to suggest he is set to do - the 24-year-old could well be the perfect signing for Wolves, and could perhaps even become their next Jota-esque talent.
