Wolves: Lage can sign Raul Jimenez replacement in Che Adams

Following a solid debut season in charge at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bruno Lage delivered the club’s third top-half finish in the Premier League in four seasons since their promotion.

This campaign hasn’t exactly gotten off to the start he wanted however, an opening day 2-1 defeat to Leeds United – despite leading 1-0 – was followed by a dull 0-0 draw at home to Fulham, where Wolves’ goalscoring woes were clearly evident.

The club have signed forward Goncalo Guedes from Valencia in a £27.5m deal but he won’t solve Lage’s problems all on his own and further additions are required.

With Raul Jimenez still a few weeks away from returning from injury, the manager will need to act fast in this window in order to sign an adequate replacement and one that will provide a goalscoring threat.

One player that Lage could sign to form an exciting duo with Guedes is Southampton forward Che Adams. The Scottish striker joined Southampton in 2019 for £15m and Lage will surely have to pay more than that to prise the player away from the south coast.

Wolves have been linked with the player in the last few days and while he may not be one to grab 30 goals a season, his presence leading the line could be crucial in Wolves’ top-half ambitions.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has lavished “fantastic” praise on the forward in the past, but it looks like it could be the end of the road for the player at the club.

Following an outstanding season at Birmingham in 2018/2019, where he scored 22 Championship goals, he sealed a move to the top flight and has netted 20 Premier League goals in total for the Saints, with seven coming last season (more than any Wolves player).

Should Wolves sign Che Adams?

No

His ability to perform at the highest level is evident in his international performances for Scotland, where he has scored six goals in 19 appearances, with a stunning strike against Denmark in a 2-0 victory ensuring Scotland were seeded for the World Cup playoffs.

Lage needs to act fast in order to sign Adams though, who has a host of other teams chasing him. However, with his Premier League experience – 97 games – he’s a player that the manager desperately needs.

With just one goal in their first two outings, it’s clear a duo like Adams and Guedes would go down a treat. The latter ranks in the top 12% of players across Europe’s top five leagues for shot-creating actions, which combined with the former’s deadly nature in front of goal is a pretty tasty recipe for the Old Gold.

Hopefully, by combining the pair they could not only discover Jimenez’s replacement, but they could rise up the table in double quick time as well.
