Wolves: Lage in talks to sign Sasa Kalajdzic

Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently in talks to sign a striker in a bid to solve their current goalscoring woes under Bruno Lage.

What’s the news?

The Athletic correspondent David Ornstein has spoken about Wolves’ interest in Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic, tweeting:

“Wolves in talks with Stuttgart to sign striker Sasa Kalajdzic. 25yo Austria int’l also speaking to WWFC over personal terms.

“No formal offer or agreement yet & sense is he’s among a number of options being explored.”

Stuttgart wants a fee of €25m (£21m) and this could turn out to be a shrewd move for the club going forward.

Kalajdzic could be invaluable

Last season, Wolves scored only 38 Premier League goals, the fourth worst total in the division, with only the three relegated sides scoring less.

Which club did Wolves loan Willian Jose from in the 2021 January transfer window?

Therefore, it’s evident the club has a major goalscoring problem and this is something Lage needs to fix soon, otherwise, they could well find themselves towards the bottom end of the division.

Making a move for Kalajdzic could well be the answer to the club’s problems. The 25-year-old Austria international made the move to Germany in 2019 and during his second season, netted an impressive 16 Bundesliga goals.

Injury restricted him to only 15 appearances last term, but he did score six times and has begun this campaign brightly, providing three assists in three matches. This record clearly shows he can cut it at the highest level.

The Austrian is comparable to former Manchester City and Roma striker Edin Dzeko as per FB Ref’s similar player model and it’s clear to see the two share similar physical characteristics such as stature as well as having a keen eye for goal.

Would Kalajdzic be a good signing for Wolves?

No

Comparing the two players from the 2019/2020 season, where they were both prolific, their stats are very similar. Kalajdzic managed 22 goal contributions compared to Dzeko’s 18 and in terms of shots per match, the Austrian managed 3.13 per game compared to 3.15 for the Bosnian.

Both are strong in the air, winning over half of their aerial battles during the season (56.8% for Kalajdzic to 63.8% for Dzeko), meaning they can utilise their strength to win the ball back or score headed goals.

His manager Pellegrino Matarazzo described once described him as “invaluable” and if Lage can thrash out a deal to bring him to England, he could well be exactly that at Molineux based on his similarities to Dzeko.

Indeed, should Wolves finally source a player, and in particular Kalajdzic, who can put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis, he will quickly become a key cog for Lage.
