Wolverhampton Wanderers ensured they will be bottom of the Premier League table at Christmas by losing 2-0 to Arsenal on Saturday evening.

The Old Gold, however, enter a new era under recently appointed Julen Lopetegui and he will be spending the winter break focusing on potential signings and looking for ways to vastly improve the squad ahead of a crucial second half of the season.

He may already be eyeing up his first signing as the Spaniard looks to improve Wolves' woeful form in front of goal by making a move for Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz.

Wolves can bin Jimenez

According to a report from Sport (via Sport Witness), Lopetegui is 'fixated' on signing Real Madrid's Diaz with the Spaniard hoping to start a 'revolution' by adding him to the Old Gold's ranks.

The 29-year-old doesn’t appear to figure heavily in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans going forward, especially considering he has played just 25 minutes in all competitions this season.

The £125k-per-week earner has played over 70 times for the Spanish giants, scoring 12 goals in the process while winning the Champions League and La Liga, proving he has a winners mentality that could only benefit this Wolves squad.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the current campaign, Lopetegui could land him on the cheap in January and may give him the licence to forget about Raul Jimenez.

The striker has netted 55 goals for Wolves since joining in 2018, although he has largely struggled over the last 18 months or so, only finding the net seven times largely due to injury and it may be time for him to move on.

Diaz certainly has a point to prove, and a move to the Premier League could allow him a new challenge, one where he will get plenty of first-team opportunities under Lopetegui.

Lyon president, Jean-Michel Aulas, for who he scored 21 in 48 under, described the forward as "high-level" and it perhaps requires a change of scenery for the player to really shine and utilise his talents.

Wolves could provide him with that platform in a team that under a new manager, should improve significantly.

Much will depend on whether or not Jimenez gets a chance to impress at the World Cup for Mexico. If he doesn’t, however, the 56-year-old might have a big decision to make with Diaz.

Indeed, he could be the upgrade the Midlands side have been craving after the unfortunate signings of Sasa Kalajdzic and Diego Costa so far.
