Wolves closing in on Matheus Nunes signing

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly set to complete their fourth permanent signing of the summer, with Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes seemingly on his way to England.

What’s the word?

As per Fabrizio Romano, the Portugal international is in line to undergo a medical with the Premier League outfit after personal terms and a club-record fee of around 50m (£42m) were agreed upon.

Taking to Twitter about that developing story, the transfer guru wrote: “Matheus Nunes has accepted Wolves proposal, here we go! Full agreement finally completed also on personal terms, €50m fee [add-ons included] was already agreed 24h ago with Sporting.

“Medicals scheduled in England in order to get it signed. Huge signing for Wolves.”

The Old Gold appear to have won the race for the highly-rated 23-year-old, with West Ham United manager David Moyes having recently revealed that the midfielder snubbed a move to the London Stadium.

Could be a real coup for Wolves

That imminent deal would no doubt represent a real coup for Wolves manager Bruno Lage, with Nunes having shone for his current side in recent years, notably being lauded as “one of the best players in the world today” by Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola.

The £31.5m-rated gem enjoyed a standout 2021/22 campaign, netting three goals and providing two assists in his 33 league appearances, while also averaging an impressive 86% pass accuracy rate – a similar record to that of compatriots Joao Moutinho (87%) and Ruben Neves (84%) at Molineux.

A real master in possession, Nunes also ranks in the top 1% for dribbles completed (as per FBRef) from his involvement in European competition of late, with such a record showcasing his undoubted ball-playing talents.

Such form has continued into the new season, with the Brazil-born ace having scored once and provided one assist from his opening two league games while averaging an eye-catching 7.7 match rating, as per SofaScore.

That creative touch from midfield would no doubt enhance a team which has been devoid of goals under Lage in recent months, with the Molineux outfit having scored at a rate of just one per game in the Premier League last term, while also netting just once so far this season.

Equally, with the aforementioned Moutinho now 35 and Neves still facing an uncertain future at the club with just two years remaining on his existing deal, Nunes’ increasingly likely addition could prove to be the timely boost that the club needs.

With the 6 foot playmaker having also been linked with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in recent times, it would represent a major coup if Wolves were able to poach him ahead of that duo, with such clamour for his services no doubt illustrating just how much talent he possesses.

After already making three permanent signings so far this summer (including Hwang Hee-chan, whose loan deal became permanent in July), a fourth arrival now appears imminent.
