Wolves plot move for Flynn Downes

Wolves are interested in signing Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes this summer as Bruno Lage looks to rejuvenate his squad.

What’s the news?

That’s according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, who told GIVEMSPORT: “Flynn Downes at Swansea is somebody that they’re interested in but he will cost £12m. I’m not sure they’ve got £12m.

“I think that really the owners don’t want to put any more of their own money into the project.

“Hence the fact that they’re trying to sell one or two players. I think it’s a tricky summer for Wolves and it could be a difficult season as well.”

Wolves have shown an interest in the player according to other reports but could face competition from fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Supporters will be delighted

Despite Crook stating that Wolves don’t have £12m, Lage could raise the funds by selling midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, with his future uncertain amid rumours that Manchester United are interested in the player.

With the club reportedly putting a £70m fee on Neves, this would then give Lage the required funds to make a move for Downes.

The 23-year-old scored once and registered two assists across 39 matches in all competitions last season as Swansea as they finished the Championship season in 15th place.

Although he primarily operates in a defensive midfield role, Downes is adept at playing further forward in the midfield or can even be utilised as a centre-back if needs be, which would be a big bonus for Lage.

Signing the player could add some depth to the centre of the pitch for the Molineux side, something fans would be delighted by as depth is what they urgently require.

Downes made 0.5 key passes, 77.3 touches, and won 1.3 tackles per match, while also having a 93% pass accuracy in the Championship last season.

The Englishman might not be the big name that the Molineux faithful are expecting to rock up this summer, but for £12m, it could be shrewd business by Lage and his staff.
