Wolves: Matheus Nunes could be a real coup for Bruno Lage

Wolves could bolster their midfield by signing a recent target as Bruno Lage looks to add more players to his squad following a quiet transfer window so far.

What’s the word?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Wolves could land themselves a highly sought-after player in midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer, saying:

Which club did Wolves loan Willian Jose from in the 2021 January transfer window?

“It looks a real exciting addition.

“I think it’d be something of a real coup for Wolves if they’re able to land Nunes from Sporting Lisbon because he’s been linked with some top clubs all across Europe, the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and a few top clubs in Spain.”

The move could cost Wolves a whopping £51m and would represent their highest ever outlay for a player, eclipsing that of the £35m move for Fabio Silva.

A great coup for Wolves

Lage has been surprisingly quiet during this summer’s transfer window, with defender Nathan Collins joining from Burnley and Hee-Chan Hwang making his move from RB Leipzig permanent.

Things look like they are moving in a positive direction, however, with a £27.5m deal being agreed to bring Valencia forward Goncalo Guedes to the club, which will give Lage a boost in his stagnating frontline.

It is the midfield area that urgently needs reinforcements, however, with Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, and Leander Dendoncker effectively carrying the side’s hopes through the middle of the park.

In Nunes, Lage would be signing a player who is fit and ready to be slotted straight into the starting XI. The midfielder played 33 league matches last season, averaging a 7.08 rating on WhoScored, comfortably better than any of the Wolves’ central midfielders.

New signing Guedes will be requiring excellent service from those behind him in order to start life off at Wolves well, and Nunes could be the catalyst for this.

Should Wolves sign Matheus Nunes?

He averaged 0.7 key passes per match for Sporting Lisbon last season, while also creating six big chances. If he manages to improve these numbers in the Premier League, Guedes will be the man to profit in what could be a mouth-watering duo for the supporters at Molineux to savour.

By fending off advances from Liverpool and Manchester United too, any potential move would be a seismic coup, with Lage aiming to utilise his Portuguese connections to the full in order to create a more menacing attack and midfield.
