Wolverhampton Wanderers are believed to be eyeing a move for Guadalajara forward, Alexis Vega, with new boss Julen Lopetegui looking to bolster his attacking options in January.

What's the word?

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke - as per Football Transfer Tavern - the Midlands outfit could well "step up" their interest in the 24-year-old should he impress at the upcoming World Cup, with the winger set to line up alongside Raul Jimenez for Mexico.

The transfer insider stated: “Wolves probably do need to strengthen again. Lack of goals and lack of creating chances has been a big problem for Wolves and that’s why they find themselves at the wrong end of the table.

“I’m sure the new manager Julian Lopetegui will be looking at attacking reinforcements come the January transfer window, and if Vega does do well at the World Cup, I’m sure Wolves might just step up their interest in him.”

This follows recent reports that claimed that the exciting sensation is on the radar of those at Molineux, with the aforementioned Lopetegui - who officially took charge on Monday - having already admitted that new additions could well be needed in the upcoming window.

Solves Wolves' "big problem"

As O'Rourke alluded to above, Wolves' 'big problem' in recent times has been their woes in front of goal, with the Old Gold having notably scored only eight times in 15 Premier League games this season - the worst record in the division.

That fact has not been aided by the recent injury absence of both Jimenez and summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic - as well as the suspension of new man Diego Costa - although this issue is one that predates the current campaign, having scored just 38 goals in 38 league games under former boss Bruno Lage last season.

In need of increased firepower to help reverse the trend, the incoming Lopetegui could well make an astute move by bringing in Vega in the New Year, with the latter man having enjoyed a fine campaign thus far with seven goal involvements in just 17 Liga MX games thus far.

The £7m-rated ace's overall record for his current side now stands at 24 goals and 23 assists in 121 games across all fronts, while also offering a real bonus as a result of his ability to feature through the middle, but also on the flanks.

That talent has been evident on the international stage of late with the Mexico City-born speedster having netted five goals in just 22 senior games for his country to date, including a recent strike against Iraq in preparation for Qatar.

While the 5 foot 8 wideman is yet to ply his trade outside of his homeland, he has built a strong reputation in recent years, having reportedly caught the attention of Lage, ironically, during the Portuguese's time in charge of Benfica back in 2019, with the player's former boss Tomas Boy describing him as an asset of "great quality" at the time.

Those at Molineux could well benefit from an extra, 'quality' asset to bolster the forward line, with it set to be a wise move if Vega is brought to England in the near future.
