2022 European Championship Ladies Golden Boot To Be Decider By Overall Winner

The England Lionesses have enjoyed a cracking 2022 European Championships so far this summer.  With the tournament being hosted in England this time around, manager Sarina Wiegman’s side have more than risen to the occasion in front of a growing number of fans.

Having topped Group A with three wins from three, the Lionesses scored a whopping 14 goals, without conceding a single one, and having hammered Norway 8-0, they also put five past Northern Ireland and in last Tuesday’s semi final clash with Sweden at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane, they were in great form once more – firing themselves into the Wembley based final with a very comfortable 4-0 victory.

During the build up to the tournament Football Betting Site Betway tasked two former England legends to compile who they thought should form the ultimate European Championship starting XI, and it makes for a good watch as there are plenty of names in there from the past that many newer fans simply would not have really heard of.  The current England squad already have one player selected in Kelly Smith and Faye White’s greatest ever side and that player, rather predictably is right back Lucy Bronze – a previous winner of UEFA’s Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

One player who has further helped shoot herself to stardom with her performances so far, is 27-year-old Arsenal striker, Beth Mead.  Now Manchester City striker Ellen White often takes the headlines at international level with her almost perfect one in two rate for her country, but Mead’s contribution is becoming just as impressive, with 28 goals in only 44 matches.  Fans can expect that record to improve further, as in only five games so far, she is now the clear favourite to take the Golden Boot award with a return of six goals and four assists.  It was probably no surprise that Mead opened the scoring against Sweden, and she then went on to contribute two assists – Bronze’s second goal on the night and Fran Kirby’s fourth.

Given Mead’s fantastic goal return at both international level, but also club level where she has proven to be prolific in front of the net – 31 goals league in only 45 matches earnt her a move to Arsenal, where she has added a further 34 league goals in 98 appearances – she was always going to be a potential Golden Boot contender going into the tie and one of Smith and White made her their favourite in another Betway interview.

Smith – “I think Katoto from France is potentially going to win the Golden Boot.  I think she’s had a brilliant season for PSG, she’s that go to person for France.”

White disagreed, saying – “Beth Mead has come into this tournament in the WSL, out of the whole squad, being the leading goalscorer and assister.  So, she’s got off to a flying start already and she’s put her name in the hat.”

With six goals in five games, Mead has done more than simply put her name in the hat as she already finds herself two goals ahead of teammate Alessia Russo but German striker did draw level in Wednesday evenings second semi final, so it could well be this years Golden Boot is decided by whichever side lifts the physically trophy as England again will battle Germany.
