Glasgow Rangers left-back Borna Barisic boosted his chances of going to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this month with an impressive performance on Sunday.

The defender put in a strong display at the back in spite of a poor showing from the team as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side were beaten 2-1 by St. Johnstone away from home in the Premiership.

James Sands is pushing for a place in the USA squad and was solid in the middle of the park, completing 89% of his passes and completing three tackles, but his Croatian teammate is the one who stood out the most.

Barisic was let down by his teammates as they failed to make the most of his quality deliveries into the box and the 29-year-old will be hoping that Croatia's manager, Zlatko Dalic, kept a close eye on his contributions.

Dalic has named his 34-man provisional squad for the tournament, with Barisic making the cut, and will name his final, 26-man, roster on the 9th of November.

Croatia face Morocco, Canada and Belgium in the group stages and will be hoping to follow up their success of reaching the final at the last World Cup in 2018.

Barisic did not make the final squad four years ago and has only started one of their last four Nations League matches, with Borna Sosa and Josip Juranovic both enjoying starts in the other three games.

This shows that the starting berth at left-back is up for grabs heading into the World Cup and the Rangers defender's performance against St. Johnstone will surely boost his chances of both making the final squad and then being named in the first XI for their opening game in Qatar.

The £18k-per-week gem enjoyed 112 touches of the ball across the 90 minutes and provided quality with his use of the possession he had. As per SofaScore, he created a whopping eight chances for his teammates, whilst completing nine of his 17 crossing attempts and three of his four long passes.

Meanwhile, James Tavernier had 114 touches and only provided three key passes while completing six of his 21 attempted crosses, which shows that Barisic offered more quality in his deliveries into the box in comparison to the skipper.

The left-back ended the match without a reward for his impressive chance creation as none of his teammates were able to beat the goalkeeper from his passes.

However, he will be hoping that his performance is enough to convince Dalic to make him the first-choice left-back for Croatia at the World Cup, after earning, hopefully, himself a place in the final 26-man squad.
