England’s increasingly enthralling World Cup campaign now rests on whether they can overcome a talented Croatia side in Wednesday night’s crucial semi-final.
And while Gareth Southgate’s largely stuck with the same starting XI throughout the tournament – the defeat to Belgium excepting – perhaps the nature of the opposition makes this the neccessary occasion to change up.
With that and particularly Croatia’s quality in midfield in mind, we asked England fans earlier this week whether Southgate should look to shake up the complexion of his engine room by swapping Jesse Lingard for Tottenham’s tough-tackling utility man Eric Dier.
There’s no doubt over which player offers England more going forward, but Dier’s defensive nous could be key to breaking up the influence of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic.
According to our poll though, the majority of England fans don’t believe Lingard is worth sacrificing for the sake of a sturdier midfield option – with only 29% of those who took part voting to start Dier instead.
