Player Ratings: The three players who impressed fans most in World Cup final

There is perhaps no greater honour in football than being named Man of the Match in a World Cup final. But which of those involved in France’s thrilling 4-2 win over Croatia deserve that individual honour?

That’s the exact question we put to Football FanCast readers following the full time whistle and while we don’t want to reveal who won our poll just yet, we can say from the off that none of the five Premier League players involved – Chelsea duo N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Dejan Lovren of Liverpool – even made the top three.

Here’s a rundown of those who did, including the Man of the Match…

Luka Modric – 6.9: He may have picked up the World Cup’s Golden Ball, but the former Tottenham man could only manage third place in our poll. In fairness, although he created two scoring chances on Sunday and completed an impressive 91% of his passes, Modric’s best performances came in the earlier stages of the competition. He and Ivan Rakitic caused real problems for France early on, but their playmaking qualities didn’t have a significant impact on the scoreline.

Ivan Perisic – 7.3: It was certainly an eventful final for the Inter Milan star, who inspired the semi-final win over England last time out. Just ten minutes after netting a stunning equaliser to pull Croatia back into the match, Perisic was punished for a handball in the box, conceding a penalty that quickly reinstated France’s dominance of the scoreline. He was industrious throughout though, and plenty of Premier League clubs will be interested in his availability this summer.

(MOTM) Kylian Mbappe – 7.8: Mbappe ended the World Cup by taking the Best Young Player title from team-mate Pogba and while his performance in the final wasn’t quite as devastating as his brace against Argentina, it was another electric display nonetheless – especially when Pogba’s driven passes set him free on the break. After continuously getting behind the Croatia backline, Mbappe reaped the rewards by drifting inside and making it 4-1 with a smart and powerful finish.
