An incredible summer of international football came to an end in Moscow on Sunday afternoon as France and Croatia provided the closing chapter to the 2018 World Cup in the 4pm final at Luzhniki Stadium, and it certainly didn’t disappoint the neutrals in a welcome change from the largely uneventful 2010 and 2014 finals that were both decided by a 1-0 scoreline.
Indeed, the final in Russia won’t be forgotten quickly, containing it’s own elements of ridiculousness – particularly a wrongly-awarded penalty courtesy of VAR and Hugo Lloris’ howler which gifted Mario Mandzukic a second-half goal – and the sublime, chiefly another thrilling performance from Kylian Mbappe and a beautiful goal from Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.
Eventually, it was pre-match favourites France who came out on top, winning 4-2 despite Croatia controlling the game, dominating possession and more frequently creating goalscoring opportunities. Much of that owed to Mbappe’s threat on the counter, which Croatia could only really counteract with a superb Ivan Perisic strike in the first half and Mandzukic’s fortuitous goal in the second.
