These Manchester United fans were conflicted over Ashley Young’s World Cup semi-final showing

Heading into the World Cup, much discussion regarding Gareth Southgate’s squad was about who would be starting in the left wing-back position.

Danny Rose was most people’s pick, but the 28-year-old had fallen out of favour at Tottenham, which put him at a disadvantage with Southgate (via BBC Sport) emphasising the importance of players playing regularly for their clubs prior to the tournament.

As a result, Manchester United’s Ashley Young, who played most of last season at left-back for Jose Mourinho, was given the nod ahead of Rose.

Young has been defensively solid throughout England’s World Cup campaign; however, as a right footer playing at left wing-back, the 33-year-old was often predictable in attack, constantly trying to shift the ball onto his stronger foot before whipping in a cross.
