Heading into the World Cup, much discussion regarding Gareth Southgate’s squad was about who would be starting in the left wing-back position.
Danny Rose was most people’s pick, but the 28-year-old had fallen out of favour at Tottenham, which put him at a disadvantage with Southgate (via BBC Sport) emphasising the importance of players playing regularly for their clubs prior to the tournament.
As a result, Manchester United’s Ashley Young, who played most of last season at left-back for Jose Mourinho, was given the nod ahead of Rose.
Young has been defensively solid throughout England’s World Cup campaign; however, as a right footer playing at left wing-back, the 33-year-old was often predictable in attack, constantly trying to shift the ball onto his stronger foot before whipping in a cross.
And in England’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals, the former Watford winger left Manchester United supporters on Twitter divided on his performance and overall display in Russia…
What I’m scared of right now is tha Ashley Young will return as our first choice left back #MUFC
